Is syrup gluten-free?

If you are wondering if pancake syrup, the answer depends on what kind of syrup you are referring to. Pure maple syrup is naturally gluten-free and doesn’t contain any additional ingredients, thickeners, or flavors, so it is safe.

Pure maple syrup is a natural sweetener that comes in many varieties. Whether enjoying grade A, pure Canadian maple syrup, or a tasty souvenir from Vermont, gluten-free maple syrup has an unsurpassed taste.

Imitation syrup, often referred to as pancake syrup, may contain some suspect ingredients not safe for celiac disease. Although some brands are gluten-free, find out below what ones are safe, ingredients to steer clear of, and how to make your own gluten-free syrup for pennies!

Ingredients to watch out for

When choosing an imitation pancake syrup brand, read the labels carefully. You will want to watch for artificial flavors, thickeners, modified food starches and malt extract, similar to when looking for a gluten-free apple cider.

While some of these may be safe because they are derived from corn, the label does not always indicate this. There is a possibility they could be a derivative of wheat or barley, which are not safe for a gluten-free diet.

Safe gluten-free brands

If you are unsure if an ingredient is gluten-free, refer to the company’s website or search celiac websites. There seems to be some mixed information about Mrs. Butterworth brand and the company doesn’t clearly label it GF.

These manufactured syrups are deemed safe to enjoy, though!

How to make gluten-free syrup

There are two options to ensuring your pancake syrup is gluten-free. One is to use 100% pure maple syrup. Since our large family uses copious amounts of syrup, I’ve discovered another more affordable solution.

As highlighted in my frugal gluten-free cookbook, a speciality diet does not have to be expensive! Making your own gluten-free pancake syrup is an easy hack to keep things affordable and please all.

For alternative flavors, replace the vanilla with maple extract, cinnamon, allspice, molasses, or a pat of butter!

  1. In a small saucepan or microwave safe container, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, water, vanilla extract, and salt.
  2. Heat until mixture comes to boil, and continue to simmer for 3 minutes.

Gluten-free syrup alternatives

There are plenty of naturally gluten-free options to try, rather than pancake or maple syrup. Either drizzle on top a gluten free pancakes, oatmeal, or fold into gluten-free crepes!
