Dr. Feelgood’s Grapefruit Cocktail combines fresh ruby red grapefruit juice, tangy grapefruit vodka, and sparkling ginger ale. Not only does this fresh grapefruit cocktail hit it out of the park in the taste department, but it’s a breeze to make.
Another leg of our recent spring break trip brought us to Columbus, Ohio for a visit with another sister and her family. Being a guest in Columbus means an abundance of laughs, great food, and some greatly anticipated time for our kids to soak up their cousins.
But really, being greeted by my brother-in-law, John, exuberantly proclaiming, “I’ve got a great drink to make for you!” is why we make the five hour trip time and time again.
John would love nothing more than his final resting place to be adorned with the epitaph Made One Helluva a Drink etched in stone.
Sometimes life can get in the way of our true passions, though. Alas, his gravestone will probably say something insignificant about being a devoted husband, father, and surgeon.
For those of us who know John intimately, we are on to the real reason he became a surgeon. It simply affords him the means for lots of family vacations, which are prime opportunities to flourish his bartending skills to us all.
His career choice also allows him to procure a large enough car to transport all his drink-making paraphernalia. For John, it makes no difference if he plans on vacationing for one night or seven, he will always be ready for some sort of craft cocktail apocalypse.
How can you expect him to exercise his craft without an inventory of muddlers, top of the line juicers, crates of booze, infusers, jiggers, boxes of fresh fruit, and his bar kit tool belt? It would be anarchy.
I’ll admit. We are spoiled with Dr. John’s stellar drinks. Sometimes we are allowed to actually enjoy them before they’re ripped from our hands.
“DON’T DRINK THAT! I’M GOING TO ADD SOMETHING TO MAKE IT BETTER.”
It must be exhausting to relentlessly feel such creative angst during the rigors of perfect drink making. At least John can always decompress with some mindless downtime in the operating room.
Without you on our trips, John, we would all just be so parched and lifeless. I’ll be your drink muse ALL DAY. Even if it means putting up with your bad 90’s hip hop tracks while sipping my glorious drinks.
