What's a tater tot hotdish?

Hotdish is an easy, comfort food meal traditionally served in MN. It has a creamy beef filling topped with crispy tater tots.

Ingredients Needed:

Bacon ∣ Ground Beef Onion ∣ Diced Tomatoes Garlic ∣ Ketchup Mustard ∣ Relish Worcestershire Cheddar Cheese Tater Tots

Cook Bacon


In a skillet cook chopped bacon until crisp. Set aside.

Brown beef


Add ground beef and onion to the skillet. Add garlic and drain grease, if necessary.



Add half the cooked bacon, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, relish, worcestershire, and 1 cup of cheese.

tots & Bake


Dump the mixture in a 9X13 casserole dish. Place the tater tots on top. Bake for 45 minutes. Top with additional cheese, bacon, & bake 5 min.

Best tips and tricks!

For extra crispy tots, broil 1-2 mins before adding the cheese to melt. Arrange the tots in a single layer. Use freshly grated cheese, rather than pre-shredded. Sharp cheddar gives a more enhanced cheese flavor!

Make-Ahead Freezer meal

Prepare dish and assemble. Cover with foil and freeze up to 4 months. When ready to bake, remove foil and add 30 minutes to baking time.
